Are You Biting Off More Than You Can Chew?

By Michael Collins

....................................................................

No, I don't mean literally... well, maybe?

I don't know where you are in relation to your weight loss goal right now- maybe you want to lose 2 pounds, maybe 10 pounds, maybe 50 pounds.

Obviously the larger the amount of weight you need to lose, the more of a challenge it's going to seem to be. The more effort you'll need to put in, more time etc...

When you think about the weight you want to lose, do you feel overwhelmed or frustrated?

Do you get that feeling in your gut- "I can't do this, its just tooo much"? or "this is gonna take sooooo long"?

If you've got a lot of weight to lose, it can often feel like antaking action insurmountable task.

The biggest problem is that the feeling often traps you and stops you from taking ANY action toward your goal.

So how do I avoid getting sucked into the trap?

1. Chunk it down. What you want to do is chop your goal down into bite sized pieces. Anytime you feel overwhelmed with any task- losing weight, making money, whatever it may be- you want to chunk it down. Instead of looking at it as "I to lose 50 pounds this year", change the perspective to "I will do what it takes to lose at least 1 pound this week".

This is a very easy to reach goal and is immediately verifiable. This means that once you hit this short term goal, you are absolutely certain that you've reached it. This will help build momentum.

You can handle anything in bite sized chunks.

2. Reward your hard work in regular intervals. We don't like putting in hard work when there's nothing coming in return. You need some kind of reward for your hard work. Now, I know a lot of people jump at the chance of making some kind of ice cream, pizza or insert your favorite food here the reward but I'd suggest going with something non- food related here.

Make it something you really want to do or have- a full body massage, maybe get a good book, or just take a night off and watch your favorite TV show or two.

Enjoy your first reward after you feel you've been really on your game for a period of time. For some people this may be 2 days, some people 1 week. Whatever time frame it is, make sure you really enjoy it.

Next, you want to increase the amount of time in between rewards. If you gave yourself a small reward after 3 days, next challenge yourself to a week. This will help build that mental muscle.

3. Record it all. No, you don't have to make a reality show and put it on YouTube. I mean get yourself a journal and record all the important info- what the goal is, how you've chunked it down, what your hard work actions have been, how long of an interval between rewards and what the rewards were.

So, back to that 50 pounds you want to lose

Remember the holidays and that New Years resolution? Feels like yesterday right? Had you started your program back when you made that resolution and stuck with it then chunked it down, rewarded and recorded, you could have been half way to your goals already!

Don't let another opportunity pass you by. If you need to lose weight, the best time to get started is NOW.
