Once in a while I like to have a diet coke, or add a little
splenda to my coffee. Are products containing artificial
sweeteners ok?
............................................................................
Michael Collins:
Artificial sweeteners are low calorie substances used as sweeteners to
replace sugar and other caloric sweeteners.

Commonly used artificial sweeteners include:
Aspartame (marketed as Equal)
Acesulfame-K
Sorbitol
Saccharin
Sucralose (Marketed as Splenda)
There’s
been a lot of talk in the media about the health concerns regarding
artificial sweeteners and their long term usage.
To date,
however, there’s been no conclusive evidence of negative effects
of these sweeteners.
In my opinion,
artificial sweeteners are helpful in controlling weight and insulin
levels.
I
personally like to use artificial sweeteners once in a while to add a
little allure to the sometimes bland food.
For
example, I use a little Splenda on my morning oatmeal, along with some
cinnamon (which has some sweet benefits in itself). This
makes me feel like I’m having a real treat, like a cinnamon oatmeal
cookie, for breakfast.
Little
things like this can go a long way in helping you stay on track.
